I am looking for a way to have hazel search a string in yaml for a markdown file. I tried using the contents but the yaml seems to be hidden from that option, and my search did not work as intended. Appreciate any suggestions on making this work.

The file needs to be categorized as a text file. That categorization comes from whatever application you have installed that handles those files. If no such application is installed, then it won't work. I suggest looking for a yaml editor out there and hope that it provides the proper categorization.

Thanks, this is useful to know.
.md files are currently mapped to Atom. Is there another editor I should use? I am not sure how to verify the categorisation for .md extensions.

You probably want to use a native editor. Atom is Electron-based so is cross platform and probably does not integrate well with Mac-specific system features.
