Is M1 support available? Sat Dec 12, 2020 1:36 pm • by noodlehard
Does Hazel support the M1 chip? If not, roughly when will that support arrive?

BTW - I searched before posting and the search failed, saying "M1" is too common. Yet, I couldn't find any entries.

Thanks.

Yes, it's supported. It's mentioned in the FAQ here: https://www.noodlesoft.com/kb/hazel-5-faq/

Also, it's better to search for Apple Silicon. The M1 is a specific chip and I'm sure in the future, there will be others with a different name.

Hi,

I just found aout about your app. I think this is amazing for my needs.
I have a new apple m1 mac mini and I want to reorganize my crazyly chaotic data. Hazel seems perfect.
for start I tried to apply the exampled rules for download folder that came with the installing pack. I just changed the default folders with mines. It doesn t work. could be due to my apple silicon, or I am doing something wrong?

thank you in advance, My bests, Sorin

Can you describe what doesn't work exactly?

Hi there, meanwhile I succeded to work quite well with Hazel. Again, this is amazing.
Anyway, I encountered a small issue. Maybe you can help me, but first of all, i would describe you my workflow.

I am an artist and I want to organise my archive files. Basically, I have a bunch of images that I’m tagging with hierarchical keywords in Photomechanic 6. for example:

A.Photomechanic

1.first set:
artwork > painting > oil on/acrilyc on/ etc... > canvas/wood/etc...

2. I also append a second one
size >200 > 300

3. I edit Description field with the ARTWORK NAME
4. for whatever reason, on Headline field I am putting the YEAR the work was completed.
here is the problem, actually. I am not able to freely edit a Date field, so I came with this solution.
And also I didn’t put the year as keyword, to simplify the hierarchies.

B. Hazel.
reading keywords and fields(description and headline) I do this:
1. rename the file with [DESCRIPTION]_[HEADLINE]_[200]x[300]cm_[oil on][canvas].tif
2. move it to subfolder WORKS > [HEADLINE]WRK > [painting]

everything works well, except when the HEADLINE field is read, the output is with aquestion mark at the end. in the filename and folder as well.

Neutrasomni_2018?_139x147_cm_oil on_canvas.jpg
or
2018?_WRK

my first question is if there is proper field to put the year of completion(it is often different from the year the photo was taken)
the second one is related to the HEADLINE question mark outcome. Can I get rid of it?

thank you, my bests, Sorin

I'm guessing that question mark is in the headline field. I don't know what metadata you are using in Hazel to access that but I suspect it's an issue with the tool putting that data there in the first place.

Check the other metadata on the file and see if there is another date attribute you can use.

thank you for your reply.

I am sure I put the year (2018 in this case) without question mark.
If I read the file with any other software, it looks without " ? “ attached.

I was wondering if there is for Hazel any issue reading HEADLINE field that contain only numbers(without letters).

Again, how are you reading the headline field? What's the name of the Spotlight attribute Hazel is using? All Hazel does is read that info that is available. The only other thing I can think of is if you accidentally entered an invisible character in your pattern. You could try re-entering your pattern to see if that clears it up.

thank you, meanwhile I succeded to modify the date of the photos acordingly, so I use the data field instead of headline. everithing works fine.

But I encountered another problem:

I have one folder where there are all sorts of image files: mainly jpgs and tifs, and raw files as well.(arw, cr2 and nefs).
Imagine that I have a batch of files (al types: jpgs, tifs and raws) and all of them are keyworded with the same hierarchical path of keywords.

Hazel is applying well the rules (rename and move to subfolder) only for jpgs and tifs. But all raws are stucked in the original folder, like they wouldn t have the keywords attached. If I check them in Mac Finder, I cannot see the keywords, like I do with jpgs and tifs.

First I thought it could be an issue with Photomechanic (where I am applying the kw) but I checked the raw files in another software (DXO PhotoLab 4) and the keywords are there.

I tested the rule, and it seems the keyword is not recognised.
I don’t know how to attach the screenshots here, to show you exactly what I am talking about.

Did you encountered this kind of problem?

thank you, Sorin

Hi, It seems I found a sollution for my issue.
I needed to set up my Photomechanic to write metadata for RAW files in both XMP and ITPC-IIC data blocks. Before that change, the updates were made only in XMP.

my conclusion is Hazel reads only ITPC data block. Am I right?

Because my digging is not stoping here, I have the same issue with video files (mov, mp4), for whom Photomechanic is apparently able the write only in XMP block.

Can you help me with this info? does Hazel read XMP?

thank you.

ps. I suppose my thread is not in the right place, my first question was related to apple silicon (working fine, by the way!), and now I am far away. sorry for the mess, I am new here. Please advise me how should I proceed with this thread.

Hazel uses Spotlight. It does not know anything about the specific file formats. You'll need to check the Spotlight attributes (do "Get Info" on the files) to see if they are readable there.
