multiple v5 Folder Group issues Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:16 pm • by gcoghill
After upgrading to v5, I got to work sorting my Rules into Folder Groups. I used the search field to narrow down my folders, and at times when dragging the folders that matched the search results to the desired Folder Group, my screen would go black. This happened repeatedly.

The computer was still running, and a keyboard tap eventually brought back the screen, which led me to hypothesize that maybe Hazel was running some disabled rule (or one that just shouldn't be triggered) that put the display to sleep.

Also during this process, Hazel would at times just come unresponsive. No beachball, but it was "frozen". Even more oddly, after a Force Quit, I went to relaunch it from the Recent Applications folder in my Dock, and got a strange message along the lines of "The application Hazel is not current running" or something similar.

Now, I am seeing all my Folder Groups are gone. All the folders are still there (I think), but the Folder Groups they were in are not. They appear to be in the order they were in when in the Folder Groups.

What version of Hazel and macOS are you running?

Can you do the following?

- Launch Console
- Enter Hazel in the search field and hit return
- Trigger the bug
- Send me the resulting log messages

macOS 10.14.4
Hazel 5.0.3

I was unable to get the black screen bug to happen again, perhaps because I don't know which folders I was moving to cause the issue. But doing so was dragging my Mac performance into the gutter, with incessant Hazel beachballs.

I had to Force Quit Console because it too beachballed when I tried to Share the info. There were like 2,800 entries and growing, after just a few minutes. Force-Quitting Console made the Mac a bit more responsive.

Another issue before I forget: when dragging folders to a group, the tooltips get mixed up. Hovering over the folder shows the wrong file path. The Mac/Hazel was lagging/freezing up too much for me to troubleshoot this. But guessing the tooltips were not following the moved folders.

Mac has been running slow in general since upgrading to v5.

I just emailed you a log entries file, but it was just Hazel 5 running with Console running and "Hazel" in the Console search bar. Just doing that, with no input from me, was dragging my Mac to a crawl.

I figure we need to resolve that before trying to troubleshoot the other folder issues.
