sorting files and color label folders. Thu Apr 08, 2010 6:32 am • by voidy
Hey Guys / Girls,

I have tried hazel out a while ago and havent used it since i got my mac mini and my brand spanking new 27” imac :D, But I wanna go back to it cause I did love using the program. However I have 1 request and I hope its possible to make it happen cause it will make my media center live so mutch easier :P. I know its kind of complex (at least i think so :P) and if there are scripts required for it im up for using anything as long as the end result is somewhat what im looking for.

im currently at work and dont have acces to my mac's but if its needed i can make some screenshots of the folder structure to make it more clear.

Below ill try to explain how the folder structure looks like and what I want the end result to be.

MAC MINI:

Downloads
    Completed Downloads
      Movies (doesn’t matter)
      Series (some examples)
        Scrubs
          Scrubs-01x05.avi
          Scrubs S01E06.avi
        Spartacus
          Spartacus 1x10.avi
          Spartacus S01E02.avi

External USB drive
Series
    Scrubs
      Season 1
    Spartacus
      Season 1
      Season 2
    Seinfeld
      Season 1
      Season 2
      Season 3
    Friends
      Season 7
      Season 8
    Dexter
      Season 4
      Season 5

That are some of the examples.

What I want hazel to do is check the series folder within the completed downloads and check for names like “Spartacus” or “Scrubs” (movie files and maybe delete the folder after the movie file has been moved) and then move them to the external usb drive in the same folder AND the most important thing I want Hazel en give the folder where the recently episode got moved to label it RED or any color so that I know there are files in there that need renaming and sorting for the correct season ,The season and renaming I can do by hand. Following that when there is nothing to sort in there I want the folder to be given a color label (doesn’t matter what color).

hope its clear if not ill be here to clarify this.

anyways for those that take the time to help or atleast read this wall of txt :D thanks in advance and looking forward to seeing some reply's

Search the help for "match patterns" and "custom tokens". Using those, you can have Hazel pick apart the file name. Check my post here:

Also, check my post here:

There, I provide a little Applescript where you can re-target the rule to make subsequent actions operate on the parent folder of the file being processed. You can stick your color action after that.

I think with the above you should have the basis for what you want to do.
