Syncing iTunes library to another computer Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:09 pm • by bvp663
I did a search of the forums and couldn't find any solutions. Here's my setup:

I have a MacBook Pro that I work from and keep all my music on. I have a mac mini in the living room that acts as my media center w/ a HD hooked up to it for music.

Is there a way to make sure the Mac Mini has all my latest music as the itunes library on my macbook changes?

I have the Mac Mini's external drive where the music will go set up as a shared drive on the network and I have it's iTunes pointing to a folder on that drive.

Current Rule Set is:
iTunes Folder (Macbook Pro)
- If any of the following is met:
- Any File
- Date Last Modified is after Date Last Matched
- Copy file to folder 'iTunes' (on Mac Mini)

I run the rule but nothing happens. Any suggestions on how to make this work?

Thanks,
-Brian

Check out the sticky article in this forum about subfolders. I suspect that's part of the problem. Also, don't use the "Any file" condition with anything else as it makes no sense. It is always true so it doesn't matter what other conditions you add.

Also, if you want the "Artist-Album" folder structure, you can add a "Sort into Subfolder" action and generate a pattern based on "Authors" (that's where the artist information is stored) and "Album". If you need more details on how to do this, let me know.

Thanks for the reply! I checked out that subfolders sticky and tried to implement it without much luck. I just want to create an exact copy with the exact same structure of the itunes folder on my macbook onto my mac mini and have the itunes on the mac mini linked to the copied folder.

Some further suggestions or a step-by-step would be much appreciated!

Is your structure based on iTune's organization structure of Artist/Album ? If so, do as I described above by using the "Sort into subfolder" action to sort by "Authors" and "Album".

If your folder structure is something of your own devising then you might have to wait for version 2.3.5 where you will be able to mirror the structure over. It's in beta now so if you are ok with running test versions, check the beta forum.

The folder structure is different on my macbook, I don't allow iTunes to organize it for me. Here's my structure:

iTunes Music
>Albums
-Artist
-Album
>MP3s
- No folders, just a huge folder of mp3s that aren't full albums.

It doesn't matter where the files go on the Media Center since I don't care what the folder structure is on that end. Maybe get all the mp3s to funnel into the "Add to itunes" folder on the media center.

Can you describe how it's not working? If you want to just have all the files stuck into a single folder at the destination, you can just do a "copy file" action to that one folder. The condition for the rule should be something like "Date added is after date last matched" if you want it to copy over any files that have been added.

Use the preview function to test your rule logic and once that looks ok, check the logs for any errors. It might be better to email me with this info at that point.
