Sudden issue matching content in PDFs Wed Oct 04, 2017 7:45 am • by paulb
I've been using Hazel for a good while now and this morning needed to create a new rule. I duplicated an existing rule and changed the content matches to suit the new document but couldn't get it to match. I checked a document which used to match the existing rule, and that also failed the content match. So I created a clean scan of a document which has matched the original rule in the past and tried to set up a new rule to match the contents. Heres a couple of pictures to explain what's happening:

1 - Add new rule. Set filename match and then use preview to select text for a contents match:

2 - Copy and paste text from preview in to rule. Rule doesn't match! (same result if I manually type the text)

The document has been OCR'd in exactly the same way as all my previous scans have. I'm on macOS 10.12.6 and Hazel 4.1.4. I may well be doing something wrong, but scratching my head at the moment. Any ideas gratefully received :)

Try using "contain match" instead of "contain". "contain" uses Spotlight and I'm guessing in this instance, it isn't indexing the file. If you use "contain match", Hazel reads the file directly, though at the expense of some performance.

This would indeed appear to have been a Spotlight indexing issue. All is now working normally again. Thanks.
