Can not choose destination folder Wed Jul 12, 2017 5:07 am • by webrockers
Hi

I'm currently using macOS High Sierra10.13 Beta (17A306f)

I started creating a rule and wanted it to move certain pdfs to a subfolder within Documents (iCloud Drive) and though Hazel lets me select the specific folder (subfolder within Documents, which is an iCloud folder) it doesn't accept it into the rule.

Does anyone have any knowledge about that?

Cheers

Have you tested whether this works on Sierra? iCloud is not very well implemented in that it limits, often in unpredictable ways, how other apps can view the files. The folders/files you see in Finder do not actually reflect how the files exist on the filesystem so it makes it difficult for other apps to be able to deal with them (possibly because Apple doesn't want them to).

If it does work on Sierra, then let me know but I suspect it's a general iCloud issue. I highly recommend using some other service, such as Dropbox, if at all possible, as it doesn't resort to these types of shenanigans.

Hi and thanks for the fast reply.

I just found out what is the reason.

Sierra lets you save disk space by moving files/folders to the iCloud. If you chose to, it decides what and when it does it.

In my case, the folder I wished to put the files to, was in the iCloud. So it only existed virtually, which wouldn't let me use it.

I got an idea that it could be the reason, when I noticed the "small cloud with an arrow down" icon next to some folders.

To get them local available it has to be clicked and the content gets downloaded with having the icon disappear.

And after that, everything worked just fine.

Best wishes

Ah, that would do it as well. Good to know it wasn't a deeper issue causing it.
