Backup a Folder Fri Jul 15, 2016 8:43 pm • by gringley
For some reason I am not getting this by searching. I have a folder with subfolders on an internal drive. I want to sync that folder to a USB drive hanging off a Time Capsule, and keep it in sync. How do I do this with Hazel? I can create rules that do the initial sync and skip duplicate files on the USB drive, but so far I am not getting updates when I copy new files to the internal drive.

So I ended up modifying the rule to use Any File. On one folder when I added a file it worked, but then on the other folder when I deleted a file I got 19 minutes ago : Could not sync file/folder at Mac Software to Mac Software. ???

Just using "any file" will just have it sync once. If you want it to sync more than that, you will have to add conditions to either do it when something is modified (as shown in that thread I referenced) or on a schedule

As for the error, you should turn on debug mode as described here: https://www.noodlesoft.com/kb/hazel-debug-mode/

Then check the logs after that. It should have more detailed messages about where and why it failed to sync.

So now I find I have 107 sync backup folders in my Trash for the file I deleted, roughly one an hour. It appears the rule is running OK in the sense of its conditions. The target folder is a USB disk off of a Time Capsule, and without debug I see errors like this - 2016-07-24 08:28:39.329 HazelHelper[664] Error retrieving filesystem mount point: No such file or directory.

As a separate issue I found I had a 0 length Hazel 1483 and had to manually delete it and supply an admin password.

I wouldn't worry about those errors unless you feel there's something not behaving properly.

As for the prefpane in the trash, did you install Hazel machine-wide? If so, then you will need to have admin permissions any time you need to manipulate it (move, copy, throw away, delete, etc.).
