Copy to Subfolder Based on Filename Sat Jul 09, 2016 3:30 pm • by Gigamesh
Hey Mr. Noodle,

I am trying to copy files from one drive to another. I would like them to be copied to a subfolder of the parent folder based on the name of the file.

E.G. If the file is named, alpha.other.other.other.ext, I want it to be copied to Volumes/Parent Folder/alpha.

I can get the folder name based on the file name easy enough with a custom attribute. The problem comes when I go to copy the file. I can only select "Copy to Volumes/Parent Folder" without being able to append the attribute to the end of the file path.

I realize I can do this in two steps by copying the file to the Parent Folder and then, in rules for the Parent Folder, sort the files into the subfolders, but that requires monitoring 2 folders. Not the worst thing, but hey, we all want to do things our way or the way we envisioned them.

Is there a way to copy a file to a subfolder based on an attribute?

Much thanks. Great product. Been using it for 4 or 5 years and always finding new things to automate.

You can do it in one rule. Do a copy, then a sort into subfolder. No need to monitor the folder at the other end.
