Sorting on dates Wed Jan 27, 2016 7:23 am • by MichaelTzu
I am trying to figure out how to set up a rule and think I might need to use applescript or maybe automator.
Below is image of folder structure. First level is individual Client folders, then individual job folders including one that begins with XXX……

Image

Individual job folders are manually created in Client folders and once approved folders are moved into XXX……… folder. I want them to stay there for 5 days - as often client comes back for further amendments.

What I want to be able to do is for any folder in XXX……… if the folder has been added over 5 days AND folder is in current month then move to current Month folder, else if added before beginning of current month move to previous Month folder.

Currently the Month folders are in XXX……… but could be up one level. All Month folders in all Client folders start the same, i.e "1 Jan Client", "2 Feb Client" and so on.

I am trying to figure out a couple of things.

1) How can I set up rule/s to move folder to correct Month without manually having to assign for every month for every Client the correct Month folder - I don't know applescript but think this might be required?

2) How can I let Hazel know that it does not need to dip into a Client folder as nothing changed since previous check?

Feedback and suggestions as to how I can achieve these objectives would be greatly appreciated.

I have got as far as setting up 3 rules that get me inside the XXX…… folder and label folders added over 5 days as a way of testing. But next bit has me stumped.

Thanks

Michael

1) If you want to base it on date added, then you can use that attribute in the Sort into subfolder action. You can edit the date attribute to only use the month which I think should do what you want.

2) Not entirely clear on this. Do you want Hazel to never go into client folders? If you only want Hazel to do into XXX, then you can have your subfolder rule (see sticky at top of forum) instead of matching all folders, only match the XXX folder.

I have been playing with this issue to try and grasp the logic but still not getting it.

I have set up this rule at top level which is fine

However, second rule below:
Image only applies to folders beginning with XXX but when I check, see below it applies to all folders so the rule seems not to be restricting to folder with XXX. Yet when I run to see what happens label is not changed even on folder beginning with XXX - I simply don't get it. Once I do - great but still struggling here as I really want to get the logic.

Are you using the preview function (the "eye" button)? If not, then you really should. In this case, the first rule matches all folders so folders will not get a chance to match the second rule. If you don't want Hazel to go into XXX folders, and instead label them, then you need to re-order you rules to take that into account.
