Rules Don't Automatically Run Sun Aug 16, 2015 11:55 pm • by houdini255
I have a bunch of Hazel rules/actions setup for some folders on a network share (SMB). The rules won't automatically run, ever. If I run the rules manually they work fine. However, Hazel is not executing when new files are added to the folder. Does Hazel have issues working with network shares? Is this a known issue?

Network shares do not generate file events so in those cases, Hazel runs every few minutes. Are you waiting that long or are you running things manually pretty soon after the files are added?

I wait for an entire day and the rules are not run. When I click to preview I can see what will be matched and it's correct. When I run the rules manually, they work great.

Check the logs. Go to the "Info" section and click "View Log". Try adding a file and see if there's any activity after 5 minutes.

Yeah, I've been doing that and there's really no activity in the log file until I manually run the rules. I'll try some more and report back.

I've been testing for days and it's just the same. The rules don't run unless they are manually run. When I run them manually everything works as expected. This is an SMB network share on OSX 10.10.5. I'm using Hazel 3.3.5.

Is there a way to execute Hazel rules via a script or cron job?

Not really, and it's more productive if we try and narrow down the issue here.

Can you describe what is providing the SMB share? Is the mount location consistent or does it tend to change? When you hover over the folder in Hazel, it will reveal the path. Does that mesh with where the SMB mount really is? Also, do you see any log messages about an undeployed folder?

Can you describe what is providing the SMB share?

I'm using a Synology NAS, which is connected via Ethernet to wire router (as is the Mac I'm using Hazel on).

Is the mount location consistent or does it tend to change? When you hover over the folder in Hazel, it will reveal the path.

The mount point is always smb://192.168.1.20/downloads. When I hover over the folder in Hazel it simply reads downloads > hazel. It doesn't show the full path (smb://192.168.1.20/downloads/hazel).

Does that mesh with where the SMB mount really is?

I believe it meshes, yes. When I navigate to the folder in Finder and drag it to Hazel, it is not added. That should indicate that the folder is already present in Hazel, yes?

Also, do you see any log messages about an undeployed folder?

I DO see messages about an undeployed folder:

Code: Select all
2015-08-28 18:24:22.823 HazelHelper[346] Attempted to run worker on undeployed folder: /Volumes/downloads/hazel.

I see that message several times.

I don't think the path when you hover over is correct. There's something odd going on with the translation there. When you do "Reveal in Finder", does it show the correct folder?

One test: create an alias to the same folder on your desktop. Whenever Hazel loses track of it, check the alias as well and see if it is able to resolve to the correct place.

I too am seeing the rules are not auto running -- I look at the "preview" and it show files meeting the requirements.

bmoore12: Can you post more details? Keep in mind everyone's situation is different. I suggest checking your logs and emailing them in if you can't figure it out by looking at them.
