append vs. replace in (Spotlight) comments Sun Jul 26, 2015 8:46 am • by lerone
hello,

after I have mastered the notoriously tricky "subfolder"-question, I have run into something unexpected:

I have two rule-sets working on same folder + its contents. that is because I want to add information to a subfolders content-files, while retaining all the info from (the rules of) its parent-folder/s.

now: I can´t find a way to append spotlight commentary info. everytime a rule runs (originating from either parent-folder or specific subfolder) the prior, existing spotlight commentary content is *completely replaced* :-(

it works fine with tags, where actions *combine*. I can´t really believe there is no way in Hazel to add-up the content of the commentary-field...
– but I am only finding one option under "Do the following...": and that is *add* comment. there seems no way of determining whether it´s *replace or add*. and actually, I would be very happy if *add is really add* :-D
so, ... am I overlooking something?

any help or hint appreciated! thx in advance!

When using the comment action, by default, it should have the "comment" attribute in there. That represents the existing comment. If you delete that, you end up replacing the comment. If you want to add to it, leave it there and add stuff either before or after it.
