Hazel Acting a Bit Overzealous about "Date Created"

Hello all!

I have a hazel rule set up that uses the date created on files with an extension of OFX. The conditions for the date created are set for not in the last two hours. Once the conditions are met, the file is moved to the trash. This rule worked correctly in Hazel versions prior to 3.2.7. Now, the files are moved into the trash almost immediately.

Any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Check the actual date created on the files. I suspect they are not what you think they are.

I thought that may be the case as well! I downloaded current versions of these files generated by the website, and they look like this…

Image

Created Today, 10:28 AM
Modified Today, 10:28 AM
Last opened Today, 10:28 AM

Here is the entry of the move in Hazel's Log:

2014-07-15 10:28:41.818 hazelworker[15314] Processing folder Downloads
2014-07-15 10:28:45.077 hazelworker[15314] export.ofx: Rule Send Old Bank Download Files to Trash after 2 Hours matched.
2014-07-15 10:28:46.677 hazelworker[15314] [File Event] File moved: export-1.ofx moved from folder /Users/Neil/Downloads to folder /Users/Neil/.Trash.
2014-07-15 10:28:49.860 hazelworker[15314] Done processing folder Downloads

Again, any help would be appreciated!

Can you post the rule?

Here is a screenshot of the rule…

BTW, you don't need to use a nested condition in this case. You can just have both conditions at the top level.

I suggest trying the preview. Click on the "i" button for the file and see if the date created there is something different than what is in Finder.

I'm aware of the nest not being necessary, but thank you for noticing and mentioning it to me. Originally, I had two file types that the rule was looking for.

So, here's an update. I restarted my computer yesterday, and Hazel is now letting the files sit, as expected. What could have possibly caused it to become overzealous in the first place?

I can't really say. Was there any fiddling with the system clock? Keep an eye on it and next time it happens, check the preview as I mentioned before.

Ok, it has happened again. I moved the file back into the "Downloads" folder after Hazel grabbed it and moved it to the Trash. Here is a screenshot of the preview. I'm not seeing anything telling here.

Thanks again for your help!

Hmm, it's not matching in that screenshot which makes me wonder if the created date got updated when it got moved then moved back.

Maybe instead, have that action color the file. That way, when it (falsely) triggers, it will still be in place and you can check the created time then.
