App Sweep - Not Working Sat Mar 22, 2008 6:53 pm • by danio1972
Hello,

I have the latest version of Hazel installed and have noticed that at some point in the recent past AppSweep has ceased to function; I have installed all Apple updates inclusive of 10.5.2.

When an application is moved to the trash, there is no offer to uninstall any file/program. I have enabled the debug mode and cannot see any entry at all in the log relating to Appsweep activity, neither are there any relevant error messages I can see - I would be happy to send the log if it would be in any way helpful; there are only references to rules firing at regular intervals.

I have left a good 10 minutes between trashing an App and deciding that nothing is happening; I have also tried dragging the application to the Trash as well as using he apple-delete key combo; neither has any effect.

Further to this I have tried turning Appsweep on and off and stopping/restarting Hazel - no effect sadly.

Yes, send me the logs if you can. Email would probably be best.

Also, start Activity Monitor and find any long running hazelfolderwatch processes. If one is sticking around for more than a minute, then select it and do View->Sample Process. If you could send that output as well, that might give some further insight.

Thanks.

Ah! I re-enabled Debug, dropped 'Camino' into the trash and waited for several minutes, nothing seemed to happen. I dropped a PDF into the bin and the text below appeared straight away - seems Hazel still thinks Camino is installed as it see's it in my Time Machine backup

Does this help?

As additional info, my Time Machine is set to use a Firewire drive. Time Machine is the only thing that drive is used for. I am using OSX 10.5.2 with all updates applied inclusive of the recent supplementary security fixes. Hazel is also the current release version.

Ah, that would explain it. Hazel usually filters out stuff on Time Machine drives. In your case, it doesn't look like one, though:

/Volumes/Leopard Backup/Applications/Camino.app

On my TM drive I have a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level (and I believe this is what Hazel is looking for). Are you sure that's a Time Machine backup or just a manual backup you made yourself? If the latter, you'll have to delete that yourself as Hazel can't guess what you consider a backup otherwise.

Penny has dropped! Yes, the drive it is referencing isn't Time Machine... (I am embarrassed now...) it's a backup drive by 'Superduper'.

Would it be possible to enhance Hazel to have a setting through which you could instruct it to ignore certain drives &/or partitions to prevent this happening? I can get around this issue I think as Superduper can auto-mount and dismount a partition when using a schedule; if I want to run a manual backup it will mean extra work :( to perform those functions myself.

Just by way of an added update -:

I've created a scheduled entry in 'Superduper' now which automatically mounts and the dismounts the required backup partition.
I've tested Hazel's AppSweep with the drive dismounted and all is well again.

It would be nice if there was a way to provide drive exclusions in Hazel itself, or, perhaps a way to advise Hazel which is your primary drive for Appsweep; then it can discount the information on any other drive? I have other App removal options via other utilities but none of them are automated like Hazel

I'll enter it into the feature database for consideration. This one is a tad esoteric so it may be hard to describe to users. Nonetheless, I'll think about it.

I would like to second the request for some mechanism that would allow users to exclude particular drives. I also use Super Duper and often have a secondary backup drive active alongside my Time Machine drive, which has caused some problems with App Sweep in the past. Thankfully, I stumbled across this thread and discovered a temporary workaround by either turning off or ejecting my backup volume to ensure that App Sweep will work, but I would definitely appreciate some way of having an option to set this up in the application. Thanks for the considerations!

Yes, it would be good to exclude mounted backup drives.

How does Hazel find the applications on other drives? Does it use Spotlight?

I added the backup drive to Spotlight’s exclusion list, waited a couple of minutes, even deleted the hidden Spotlight folder in the root folder of the backup drive and it still found the application inside the mounted backup and didn’t want to sweep the trashed application.

Wouldn’t an exclusion for everything inside /Volumes be better? No user is supposed to put files (applications, preferences, …) inside this location.

I'm not sure if you guys have seen this but there is a hidden default for this. Check out this article: http://www.noodlesoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=415

Hi,

I've got no disks mounted and AppSweep still doesn't work - running the newest 3.2.4. Found this in the top of the Hazel error log, which probably is the problem:

2014-02-02 01:00:00.505 HazelHelper[316] Uninstall log entries appear to be corrupted.
2014-02-02 01:00:00.506 HazelHelper[316] Error archiving uninstall log: Property list invalid for format (property lists cannot contain NULL)
2014-02-02 01:00:00.548 HazelHelper[316] Error while trying to get contents of path during db file cleanup /Users/User/Library/Application Support/Hazel: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=256 "The file “Hazel” couldn’t be opened." UserInfo=0x60800066fec0 {NSURL=file:///Users/User/Library/Application%20Support/Hazel/, NSFilePath=/Users/Users/Library/Application Support/Hazel, NSUnderlyingError=0x60800044fab0 "The operation couldn’t be completed. Not a directory"}

What file should I clear for it to work again, without messing up my Hazel setup?

I think your Hazel installation is corrupted. For some reason you have a file at Library/Application Support/Hazel. It should be a folder that Hazel uses for its internal functions. I'd look into that as it will screw up pretty much everything Hazel related.
