Testing content matches

I've been setting up some rules to extract dates (and sometimes other information) from pdfs for renaming and filing and I've found that due to inconsistent formatting in various bills I receive, it can sometimes be tough to figure out what will match and what won't, and also get consistent results from the 1st/2nd occurrence function.

Is there any way to test a content match on a document besides setting up a dummy rule in a test folder and hitting the preview button? I find that to be a slow and cumbersome way of doing it, mostly due to the trial and error involved in figuring out whats happening.

Is there any documentation about how content matches map to regex commands so I could perhaps do the tests myself with sed or grep or something?

Check the beta forums if you want to see future developments on this front. For now, to view the text of a PDF more in line with how Hazel sees it, you can open the file in Preview, copy all the text, and paste it in a TextEdit document.
