Hello all --

I've started experiencing hangs on Catalina over the past week or so which typically manifest as a frozen (or extremely slow) screen saver screen when I come back to my iMac. I suspect it is Hazel related because it coincides with:

    * Odd behavior of Hazel reprocessing many (1000s) of PDF files from several years ago (bank statements that Hazel renames and files automatically)
    * Entries in the system log that suggests Hazelworker is throwing exceptions -- see below (some details changed for privacy). There are many such log entries showing up in Console.

I can't tell if the IMac is truly frozen or just so slow so as to be unresponsive, but I end up having to force a hard restart. I also can't readily tell if this is the same as the other symptoms reported on this thread, but it sounds similar enough that I thought I'd start here before going to the main forum. The fact that Hazel is reprocessing all of these files makes me wonder if its internal mechanisms for marking files as processed has somehow been corrupted?

Any suggestions on how to debug this further would be appreciated -- thanks in advance.

Can you email a larger excerpt from the logs in? I suspect this is not related to the hang that is the topic of this thread.

I am getting hangs. It hasn’t done it a while so I thought it was fixed. Unfortunately it did it again today. I can’t recreate on demand and it doesn’t happen all the time so I suspect it’s conflicting with something else. Just not sure what.

I am waiting for the system diagnostic to finish running, and then I will email the requested information. Editing rules most commonly trigger the problem.

Is it just me, or did anyone else notice a marked improvement after disabling the "Rule Sync Options..."?

I had been syncing my rules to files on DropBox, and after tearing my hair out with the Hazel Preference Pane seemingly capturing all of the key-strokes for the system whilst refusing to Quit normally (Force-quitting would allow me to once again enter text into other apps), I decided to start turning off features... turning off all but a couple of the rules didn't help, but when I turned off the sync option, there seemed to be an immediate improvement... I haven't waited too long to make sure it is truly fixed yet, because I was so excited to finally find something that might work to fix this!

don't know but maybe this helps:
I'm quite new to Hazel and just tried to activate the Trash function for the first time (Mac OS 10.15.6). I gave Hazel full disc access, as described in the instructions but the popup "View instructions" appears every time again (Hazel still has full disc access) and I can't activate any of the functions under the Trash menu.

Maybe other users, who have already activated this feature for a longer period of time will now get the described dropouts under Catalina because of permission issues.

Try rebooting and see if it happens after that. It might be macOS's permission system being glitchy, which happens. Also, I don't think it's related to the hangs so next time I suggest posting a new topic.

Hello,

My Finder and Preview app hang when adding new tags to a file or files. I do not know if the issue is related to Hazel being installed. (Catalina, all apps up to date.)

I've been suffering with these hangs, up to 5 minutes every time, for months. Although clearing parameter RAM is the first thing many people think of when troubleshooting Macs, I did not think of that. Command-Option-P-R on startup (clearing parameter RAM) appears to have solved my computer's issue.

I am on Catalina 10.15.6 and as soon as I try to open Hazel it shows in my dock but I cannot get the window to the surface and eventually it crashes. Not certain this is the scenario you are looking for, but happy to help unless this is something else you have a solution for.

Same here. Hazel 5.0.1 on Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7

Tried 5.0.1, I get a message saying Hazel has been stopped and doesn't work even after clicking the start button. Also the menu bar icon is not present, even after toggling the config on and off in preferences. DAMN :evil:

Please read the message I just posted. This is for an older issue with Hazel 4. Anything regarding Hazel 5 does not belong in this thread.
